The start if the Europena slave trade in Africa began when two Portuguese captains, Antão Gonçalves and Nuno Tristão, captured 12 African natives in Cabo Branco (modern Maurtania) and returned to Portugal to present them as gifts to Prince Henry the Navigator. By 1460, seven to eight hundred African slaves were taken annually into Portugal, primarily as domestic servants.
